The monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, a reference point for the people of Lefkada, is located on a hill above the city of Lefkada, at a distance of 3 km from it.
The Virgin Mary is the patron and protector of the island. It celebrates with all magnificence the Monday of the Holy Spirit, with a multitude of pilgrims flocking from all the surrounding areas. On this day, the minds of all the people of Lefkada, in whatever corner of the planet they are, turn reverently and pleadingly to the image of the Lady of the island.
The long history of the Monastery begins in antiquity. A place of worship of Artemis of Lefkada at that time, it received the sermon of the disciples of the Apostle Paul, Herodion and Sosion. In a miraculous way the stele of the goddess was crushed and a small “house of thanksgiving” was gradually created. After the First Ecumenical Council (325 AD) five of the God-fearing Fathers followed the bishop of Lefkada, Agatha Agarchos, on his return to the island. Two of them settled in the area, where today the Monastery, built the first cells and enlarged the temple.
It was named “Faneromeni” because the first icon of the Virgin Mary, which had been ordered in Constantinople, was revealed drawn on the board in a miraculous way, “hand-painted”, to the monk and the hagiographer Callisto, after fervent prayer and fasting. The hagiographer only had to add the colors.
During the centuries the I. Monastery suffered much damage. However, like the other monasteries of the island, it stood a beacon of enlightenment, illuminating the people to remain faithful to their Orthodox tradition. It took its current form during the Venetian occupation (1684-1797). In the 18th c. functions as a founding, but in 1754 the coenobitic system is introduced. He maintains a school in the Metochi of the Ascension in Fryni.
After a catastrophic fire, the church was rebuilt in 1887 and welcomed the new icon of the Virgin, a copy of the old one, painted on Mount Athos by the monk Benjamin Kontrakis. At that time, the iconostasis was made, a work of Efstathios Prosalentis, as well as his icons, works of Chionadian Hagiographers.
The monastery was recently renovated, with the creation of a new wing of cells, abbot, synod, library, chapel of Saint Silouan of Mount Athos. The modern Ecclesiastical Museum also operates on its premises, rich in relics from the I. Moni and other temples of the island, as well as the “Naval Museum”, with ship models, built – donated by Mr. Nikolaos Thanos (Morina).
